Google Maps Will Help You Find the Scariest Place Near You

Now, a lot of people don’t like being scared. But, if you clicked on this article, it’s probably safe to say you’re a bit of a masochist anyhow. In which case, Google Maps has the feature for you!

Earlier today, they released a list of the 31 Most Haunted Places in America. There are some classics on there—the Amityville Horror house, Alcatraz, Salem, Massachusetts. But there are also a lot of surprising places, which, except to perhaps local residents, are unknown to even the most tireless thrill seekers. Like Bobby Mackey’s Music World, in Wilder, Kentucky, the “most haunted nightclub in America,” or the Villisca Axe Murder House, in Villisca, Iowa, where, yep, you guessed it, an entire family was killed by an axe murderer, or Devil’s Promenade, a stretch of land in Hornet, Missouri, where a “mysterious light of unknown origin” inexplicably appears.

Now, skeptics may say that there’s an explanation for all the paranormal activity that allegedly happens at these cemeteries, hotels, houses, and graveyards. Which, maybe so. But do you see the picture for this article? That’s Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Its claim to scare-fame is that it’s built on an ancient Indian burial ground, is home to 12 ghosts, and 10 people were murdered there. Now, take a look at that ominous empty rocking chair and try to tell yourself you aren’t just the littlest bit spooked. Yep, maybe you should stick to leaf-peeping for your fall road trip.
