Katy Perry will host this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, the network announced on couple days back, as it turned to one of pop music’s most visible stars for its big gala.
She is the first performer announced for this year’s awards, and is also one of the most-nominated artists with five nominations. With five VMA nominations, Perry is nominated for best pop, best direction and best visual effects awards for “Chained to the Rhythm,” plus best art direction for “Bon Appetit” and Best Collaboration with Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams and Big Sean for “Feels.”.Her big-budget video “Chained to the Rhythm” will compete in four categories at the VMA show, but she was snubbed in nominations for the top two categories of video of the year, and artist of the year
I’ve been training with MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I’m on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Come August 27th, I’ll be ready to be your MOONWOMAN! Brace for impact, kids,” Perry said in a statement, referencing the signature VMA trophy, the moonman statue.
“We’re thrilled to have global phenomenon Katy Perry as the host and a performer at the 2017 VMAs,” said Bruce Gillmer, head of music and music talent of Viacom’s global entertainment group. “She is at the forefront of music culture and the perfect person to anchor this year’s show, which promises to be one of the most diverse and music-filled in VMA history.”
MTV has experimented with different host formats for the annual party, which were generally better remembered for attention-grabbing on-stage incidents than for the award winners.
Miley Cyrus hosted the event two years ago, but in 2016, MTV decided to have multiple presenters throughout the night rather than a single host. This will be Perry’s first time hosting the VMAs. Last year’s show did not have a traditional host, but featured Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as commentators.
The hosting gig will kick off a busy 12 months for Perry, who embarks on a world tour in September and will be a judge in 2018 on the new version of television talent show “American Idol.”
Perry, who released her latest album, “Witness,” in June, is the most followed person on Twitter, with more than 100 million followers. The 32-year-old has three videos that have reached one billion views on YouTube, led by Roar.
The MTV Video Music Awards are scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on Aug. 27, and will be shown live on MTV.
